The Sound Oasis S-5000 Deluxe Sleep Sound Therapy System, an updated version of the S-3000, features an incredible array of sounds, fantastic sound quality, an alarm clock, and AM/FM radio. It’s expensive, but we think it’s worth it for anyone looking for a high-end sleep sound machine.
With this many sound options, you’re bound to find something you like. The 24 main nature sounds (all digitally recorded in the wild) are: ocean surf, north woods, thunderstorm, white noise, night train, spring rain, island surf, bonfire, stream, hidden cove, wind, asian garden, song birds, harbor swell, bamboo chimes, summer night, cooling fan, rain forest, meditation, Hawaiian surf, ocean rain, island stream, heartbeat, and secluded lake. Each of those sounds can be combined with any of the five “mix sounds:” seagulls, song birds, thunderstorm, fog horn, or loons. There’s also a “bio-sync” sound designed to help reset your system after you’ve been traveling, or even after unusually stressful days.
If that’s not enough, there’s also a built-in recorder so you can record voice memos or your own sounds, and an input so you can use your phone, mp3 player, or CD player.
The sound quality and max volume are excellent, thanks not only to good recordings, but also the combination of two speakers and a subwoofer. You can also adjust the bass and treble. Few sleep sound machines can match that.
The S-5000 includes “Sleep Enhancement Technology,” found on many other Sound Oasis and Brookstone devices, which slows down sound playback as the sleep timer shutdown nears, with the goal of easing you to sleep.
Because of the quality speakers, the AM/FM radio sounds good as well. You can set three radio presets. The alarm — which includes dual alarm clocks — can be set to go off as a buzzer, therapy sound, or the radio.
With orange characters on a black background, the S-5000′s display is large, legible, and not too bright. The backlight is adjustable. It features not just the clock, but also a calendar readout.
At some point in 2013, Sound Oasis plans to release the Sound Oasis Light Control System, which will somehow plug into your bedside lamp and gradually turn it off as you’re falling asleep, and turn it on in conjunction with the alarm in the morning. It’s an interesting idea, but we’ll wait and see how it pans out.
The S-5000 is attractively designed, though we’d stop short of calling it beautiful. It’s not exactly designed to be portable, but it’s not too cumbersome for travel, and the fact that it can run on batteries is helpful.
We think very highly of the Sound Oasis S-5000 Deluxe Sleep Sound Therapy System. It sounds great, looks good, and the alarm clock and radio are well-implemented. If it’s not going to break your budget, we highly recommend it. If the price puts you off, you could always check out our other highly recommended machines.
